In the Dordogne, we had no wish to go into business. We just wanted somewhere remote, green, peaceful, and quiet, where the air had almost as much flavor as the bread and wildflowers in the fields. A place where time didn’t mean as much.
We found it just a few kilometers south of Bergerac: at first a house and all, but then it grew and… First more gîtes. A couple of chalets. Then a few mobile homes under the trees in Great Heaven. Here we have to recall our entrance and the general view from elsewhere—because that might be frustrating—we have no roads. Yet the place sparkles like a tinkling fairyland.
It has been a small, consistent business. No socialite adventure, but a pleasant enough living. In the village, there is a small restaurant where guests may retire for breakfast: which they still remember from last night. We have three pools; that is pretty good and much appreciated by families. In the summertime, we open a snack bar—none of the trimmings, just a few cold drinks, ice creams, and whatever we feel like cooking. The guests are entranced.
There is something in the air here that just seems to slow people down. With over 4 hectares of grounds, there is plenty of space for each person not to trip into another. One does not need a map to walk from end to end, whatever tips anyone comes up with about texts. Children have space to play and run about, while dogs sleep under bushes. In the morning, one hears birds; at night, the crickets chime in. On occasion—especially during the hot summer nights—all guests stand together underneath that old oak tree, sharing a bottle of Bergerac wine and some good-natured laughter.
We are at the far edge of the estate, in a 170 m² house near the gîtes. That gives a bit of privacy. It is big enough to live comfortably even outside the season when we usually do. The rest of the area—altogether 660 m²—is set aside for rent. This includes the pools, showers (which many people look at in their bathrooms every morning), laundry area, and parking lot.
Last year, €150,000 came in from reservations. There’s a lot of repeat business, mainly from family or couple-minded people who love nature more than anything. But if you want more, there’s still space for you. We didn’t push it very hard; we never ran ads on Instagram or went to fairs—who wants more organization anyway? In return, we will make production; in short, a small adjustment.
What is so special about this place? It’s hard to put into words. Yet to be here is to be alive; it’s happening. When people leave, they all smile. They don’t look at phones anymore. They sleep sweetly; all of them. That’s what this land does to them.
If you are looking for a large, profitable investment, this is probably not it. But if you want to live simply in the country, work with your hands, and perhaps meet nice people who appreciate what you do, then perhaps this might be for you.
